The Druid Inn - steeped in history
The Druid Inn has a long and fascinating history closely connected to the Rowtor Estate and the village of Birchover.
In 1785, Henry Eyre sold the estate to John Bradley, which included Rowtor Hall, a chapel, barns, stables, outbuildings, gardens, and surrounding land.
Later, Bradley’s son, Joseph Hodgkinson, sold it to William Pole Thornhill M.P., who provided a pub for the local mining community. Housed in a former farmhouse and inspired by nearby Iron Age artifacts, it was appropriately named “The Druid”.
Established as pub in 1851 and still going strong
The inn opened in 1851 with John Kemp as it’s first landlord, shortly followed by George Marsden, who gave it the enduring name “The Druid Inn”. In 1973, Nicholas Davie-Thornhill expanded the building, enhancing it’s role as a central gathering place for locals and visitors.
Today, still part of the Stanton Estate, The Druid Inn is managed by Trefor Owen, who has worked at the pub since 2020, continuing it’s long tradition of welcoming guests with excellent drinks, and hospitality.
